Help Us RING THE BELL Again!

Our bell has been silent for much too long and we need your help. Your contribution to our RING THE BELL Fund will help us ring in the New Year, weddings, and other events in our community. We are asking for support in raising the funds needed to repair our cast steel bell, made in 1868 by the bell foundry of Naylor Vickers & Company in Sheffield, England.

Hope Shelley, Wells Town Historian, has written that “In 1866 Reverend Lewis Goodrich raised the money to purchase a suitable bell. This was put into the steeple on a long incline, and pulled up by 25 yoke of oxen. A table over 40 feet long was set up on the lawn in front of the church for a ceremony with singing, speaking, and plenty to eat.”

Please help our historic Meetinghouse bell ring out once again.  You can donate online using the blue button above, or send your fully tax-deductible gift to the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit, PO Box 801, Wells, Maine 04090.  Thank you!

In the second photo you can see the bell's broken support arm, just one of several repair and restoration steps needed to bring this beautiful and historic bell back to its former glory.  More information about the project can be found in our Five-Year Capital Plan.
